Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Farewell Ms Coyle

It is with much regret that Sussex Inlet Public School has been informed of the retirement of our wonderful Assistant Principal Ms Karen Coyle.

This is a very sad day for Sussex Inlet Public School as Karen has been a back bone of the school for many years. Her tireless contribution to SIPS has been outstanding. An amazing organiser, a wonderful mentor, a loyal employee and friend but most of all a tremendous teacher who makes that extra effort to know, understand, help and nurture all students who have been lucky enough to cross paths with her.

Karen you will be extremely missed by the students and the staff of Sussex Inlet.

We wish you a long and happy retirement.

Please find below Karen's announcement -

It is with sadness I am informing you of my decision to relinquish my position as Assistant Principal and classroom teacher at SIPS.

I would like to thank students and parents for their amazing support in my time at our school. I leave SIPS with many wonderful memories of teaching and learning with my students and peers.

The fun and adventures along the way will ensure I always remember you, the very special people of Sussex Inlet Public School.

My greatest wish for SIPS students is that they value the wonderful education they receive at SIPS and go on to reach their full potential as happy, healthy, contributing members of the wider community.

A fond farewell

Karen Coyle

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

A huge thank you must go to the team that supported our school in running the catering at last Friday’s District Athletics carnival at Sanctuary Point.

To the Sussex Inlet Rotary club a huge thank for an amazing job in the big red van. Plenty of people were lining up for seconds of your delicious steak sandwiches, sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls.

Thank you to the school P & C for donating the goods for the canteen and particularly Alison Murray for undertaking the ordering and delivery of the goods.

Thank you to Mrs Saffi and Mrs Cameron for helping run the canteen on the day.

Also, Joe from Counting the Beans for keeping us all going with his great coffee.

This endeavour raised a substantial amount of money for our school.

Sussex Inlet and District Community Forum’s secretary, Mrs Gail Drummond, in conjunction with local artists Kylie Douglass, Robert Simpson and Steven Douglass have been creating a mural based on the theme “Our History, Our Heritage”. Some of our students were able to contribute their hand and arm prints onto the background. These images will symbolically represent people past and present and our surrounding land, trees and forest. The artists have been working on their paintings inspired by historical photographs which hold a record of the history of Sussex Inlet. The mural is now complete and will go on permanent display in the Peace Park (near the cinema). The official opening of the Sussex Inlet streetscape and the mural unveiling took place on Saturday 13th July at 10.30am (the middle Saturday of the school holidays) at Peace Park, Sussex Inlet. Students who contributed their hand and arm prints were:- Jordan, Haylee, Aidan, Finn, Bridie, Hailee, Laini, Callum, Sarah, Ethan, Eden and Leevi.

Salesforce visit Library

On Friday 14th June we enjoyed a working together day as part of our ongoing collaboration with Salesforce, a cloud based web design company that is partnering with our school to support the development of flexible learning spaces, ongoing professional development and further implementation of learning programs that support 21st century learning skills in our students with a particular emphasis on STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics). Our school established this partnership as a part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen our future focused learning strategies for our students to equip them with the learning skills that will be required by the diverse roles they may choose to go into as lifelong learners.

The day was a great success with the library now ready for the delivery of some new furniture to finish the refurbishment. It was fantastic to see our students working alongside web-designers, code programmers, and project managers to build a play library or prepare a wall for painting and overhear some of their conversations about what they do in the STEM field. It was also quite enjoyable to watch some of these highly qualified experts discuss the best way to put a cubby house together with ongoing consultation from Mrs. Coyle.

We made sure to have a quality control inspection from some kindergarten students who assured us it passed muster.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and staff who contributed time, tools and lunch to make the day a success and to Mrs Coyle for the huge effort in the ongoing organisation. A special thanks also to Mrs Banwell for using her sewing expertise to organise the recovering of all our library lounges and stools. We are so excited to see our library transform into a flexible learning space that supports students to become independent learners who can engage in critical and creative thinking through hands on, collaborative learning projects.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Mural Project - Lions Peace Park

Sussex Inlet and District Community Forum’s secretary, Mrs Gail Drummond, in conjunction with local artists Kylie Douglass, Robert Simpson and Steven Douglass are creating a mural based on the theme “Our History, Our Heritage”. The mural boards were transported to Sussex Inlet Public School on Tuesday 26th Feb. Some of our students were able to contribute their hand and arm prints onto the background. These images will symbolically represent people past and present and our surrounding land, trees and forest. The artists will now be working on their paintings inspired by historical photographs which hold a record of the history of Sussex Inlet. Sometime this winter the mural will go on permanent display in the Lions Peace Park near the cinema.

This year on Cleanup Schools Day, Sussex Inlet Public School was lucky enough to host staff from Salesforce, Sydney. Sales Force is the organization that has selected SIPS to work in partnership to support student learning, particularly in the area of Future Focused learning.

Assistance from Salesforce has included funding our STEM room, the school robotics program and Teacher Professional Learning Days.

Salesforce staff also attended the school SRC induction assembly. Bijal’s message to our new leaders was, to never give up. Bijal, Ash, Charlie, Steph, Joe and Justin then helped with the school cleanup activities.

Mrs Glasson and Ms Coyle then put the next school project to the Salesforce team. The team has accepted the challenge and will be returning in June to assist with renovating the school library to make it an exciting, collaborative future focused learning space.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Government Initiatives

PRIME MINISTER MINISTER FOR EDUCATION

Dear parents, carers and the school community,

Keeping our children safe is a shared responsibility. Schools, governments at all levels, the Australian community and, first and foremost, parents take this obligation seriously.

As parents, we know that it can be challenging to raise children today in a world where risks to safety can appear not only on the street but online. And it is not always easy to navigate when the online world can have real world physical and mental health impacts.

That is why our Government has developed resources to empower parents (and schools) to protect children and prepare them to be resilient, responsible and respectful adults:

o www.esafety.gov.au - resources that promote online safety including tackling image-based abuse and a complaints service for young Australians who experience serious cyberbullying.

www.studentwellbeinghub.edu.au - support for students, parents and teachers to create a learning environment that promotes student wellbeing and the development of respectful relationships.

You can also visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au for education and advice for kids, parents and schools on how to combat and respond to bullying.

Whatever age your kids, it is never too late to make changes to improve their welfare. With the fresh start that a new school year brings we encourage you to use these resources for practical advice on keeping your family safe and well through the year.

Yours sincerely

SCOTT MORRISON DAN TEHAN

Creative Kids now join Active Kids

Active Kids and Creative Kids are programs designed to encourage more children to participate in sport, active recreation and creative and cultural activities.

Each year, parents, guardians and carers can receive a $100 voucher to go towards both creative and physical activities for school aged children. That’s $200 worth of savings per year for each child.

A Creative Kids voucher will help parents to cover some of the registration, participation and tuition costs on activities such as singing, drama, coding, languages, music, writing, drawing and photography.

The Active Kids voucher can be used on sports, fitness and physical activities for registration participation and membership costs.

The vouchers can be used once with an approved provider. To find out more parents need to visit service.nsw.gov.au.

SIPS encourages all parents and carers to spread the word throughout our school community. Together we can help ensure every student is engaged and challenged to continue to learn.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.
